| | The SWY18 Volunteer Group held an onboard fundraiser
on February 19th, 2006 to support two organizations that fellow SWY18 PYs are
working with in Kenya and India. We'd like to tell you a bit more about the
great work being done at these NGOs:

SIDAREC (Slums Information Development and Resource Centres)
 | Vision: An empowered slum community with easy access to information and opportunities that can enable them to lead decent lives on a sustainable basis
Mission: To build the capacity of slum communities through provision of quality services in the areas of ICT, advocacy and social-economic initiatives
Values: Concern for the underprivileged; Humility; Active community participation; Transparency and accountability; Collective responsibility; ‘Servant leadership’
Programs:
Early Childhood Development Program – SIDAREC provides free pre-primary education at 2 centres in some of the poorest and educationally disadvantaged communities
Youth Reproductive Health Program – Drug abuse & addiction programs, STIs and HIV/AIDS awareness programs. Youth health services.
Communication Program – SIDAREC gets information out at the grassroots level through a Community Library, Folk Media, A/V materials, Computer Training and a Cyber Café. They also produce a bi-monthly magazine, “SLUM NEWS”.
Entrepreneurship Program –Provides start-up capital for youth micro-businesses such as
brickmaking, tailoring and dressmaking, and healthcare products production.
